Health Benefits of the Beach to the Society.

Amongst all of nature’s gift, the beach is an environment that provides freedom. A perfect place to calm your mind, body and soul, feel the sun on your face, the wind in your hair, the sand between your toes and the lulling sounds of waves gently breaking the shore.
Technically, the beach is a narrow, usually gently sloping strip of land that borders the body of water, such as lake or ocean. It serves as a platform for social relations, Hence there’s a need to ensure sanitation around the beach.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), Sanitation generally refers to the provision of facilities and services for the safe disposal of human urine and feces.
The picture of beach sanitation in Ghana is embarrassing as open defecation is widespread as three out of five Ghanaians attend natures call in the drains and at the beach. The challenges to beach sanitation in Ghana in linked to the inability to create disposable points of solid waste and poor financing of sanitation policies around our coastal areas.
Just a hand full of beaches in Accra has taken up measures in ensuring good sanitation including the Kokrobite Beach resort, the Labadi Beach Resort, Bojo Beach and amongst a few whiles’ beaches across the country such as the Bola Beach, Jamestown Beach has taken little or no measures in ensuring good sanitation.
Aside the beach serving as a place of socialization, relaxation, a stress relief place to be, and a tourist site, it also has its scientific benefits to human life.
The soothing environment at the beach boost the immune system. Scientifically, they’re thought to be chock-full of negative ions that not only boost up the immune system but helps balance ones level of serotonin, improving ones mood, reducing stress level and helps to have a better sleep at night.
More often, Doctors prescribe trips to the ocean to their patients. The sunlight at the beach gives Vitamin D, which helps prevent autoimmune diseases. Seawater contains several minerals and other compounds that help boost your immune system and rid your body toxins.
It is more likely of an individual to exercise at the beach. According to research, chances of running and swimming around the beach side is 70%. Walking on the beach is better than walking on a pavement and these benefits are magnified because swimming is great, as it’s a low impact sports that’s easy on the joints and burns out tons of calories.
Seafood is an excellent source of omega-3 fatty acids, a nutrient that can’t be found in all diets. This nutrients have health benefits, like reducing your risk of heart disease and regulating triglyceride levels in the blood. Most seafood restaurants abound at the beach and one is likely to step into one there although there are not guaranteed.
Above all these benefits associated with the beach, it is of much importance to ensure a clean and serene environment around the beach. This can be done through education and the Ghanaian individual’s positive attitude. Educating Ghanaians and most especially the beach dwellers on the need for a clean environment.
Provisions of dustbins should be made for the disposing of plastic waste at every juncture of the beach to ensure clean environment.
Then we can all enjoy in full measures the benefits of the beach.
