The deteriorating nature of most beaches in Accra has lead to the action of most organizations to embark on clean up exercises along beach sides. The Lucozade Ghana organized a clean up exercise on the 22nd of February 2020, to clear plastic wastes at the Osu beach. The clean up exercise aimed at addressing the menace of plastic waste pollution in our water bodies.

It is believed that swimming in beaches with pollution in the water or in the sand can make one ill. Due to this, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) supports local and states efforts to protect
and clean up beaches. EPA also supports monitoring and notifications efforts by local beach programs by providing grant money.
Polluted runoff (water that drains after rainfall) and untreated sewage released into the water can expose swimmers to harmful microorganisms called “Pathogens”. Pathogen is an organism that causes disease and can be present at or near the site where polluted discharges enter water. Pollution created by people who leaves trashes or animals wares at beaches.

Due to the effects of poor sanitation of beaches on humans, it is advisable that the media takes it on to educate individuals on the consequences of poor sanitation around beaches and also, make them see why it is relevant to always keep our beaches clean.
Clean up exercises should be organized regularly by the government to ensure that our beaches are always in a good state so as to attract more income and investment as well as to improve upon a healthy lifestyle in the country.
